Faces of Christmas – Simeon

25 And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to carry out for Him the custom of the Law, 28 then he took Him into his arms, and blessed God. Luke 2:25-28

When you are in the presence of the Lord the Holy Spirit will be upon you.  In Acts 1:8 Jesus tells His disciples that when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you are going to receive the power. This power is to be a witness for Jesus. We see that Simeon was a witness for Jesus to even His parents. Simeon had the power to recognize who the baby was. He recognized Jesus without even meeting Mary, Joseph, or baby Jesus before. This was only possible through the Holy Spirit.

When you are in the presence of the Lord you will worship in the truth and spirit. We see that Simeon worshipped God in truth and spirit when he came into the presence of Jesus. The Holy Spirit revealed to Simeon that he would not die until he came into the presence of the Lord. When he took the baby into His arms He blessed God.

Donald Whitney stated “having the Holy Spirit residing within does not guarantee that we will always worship in spirit and truth, but His presence does mean that we can.” Having the Holy Spirit does not mean we are going to worship God truly, but it does help. Simeon, who was indwelled by the Spirit, worshipped God by blessing Him. He knew that He had seen Jesus and was so thankful for this experience. When was the last time you thanked God for being able to come into His presence?

When you are in the presence of the Lord you are in peace. Simeon said that God was now letting His servant depart in peace. Simeon knew that he was not going to pass away until he saw Jesus. He was now experiencing peace of mind that came from seeing and experiencing Jesus. This is not saying that your life will be perfect and never have any troubles after coming into the presence of the Lord. What it is saying is that being in the presence of the Lord means that you experience the emotion of peace. Jesus wants us to cast our cares and burdens upon Him. Jesus wants us to take His yoke and He will give us rest.

When you are in the presence of the Lord you see salvation. Isaiah 52:10 The Lord has bared His holy arm in the sight of all the nations, that all the ends of the earth may see the salvation of our God. Isaiah even prophesied that God’s salvation would be seen by all of the earth. Our salvation only comes through the Lord Jesus. Simeon knew that he was in the presence of the Lord and therefore had seen his salvation. We will never know our salvation if we do not come into the presence of God.

When you are in the presence of the Lord people will see the Lord through you. The things that Simeon was saying to Joseph and Mary was not anything that was new. They had been told that there son was the Messiah. They knew they were in the presence of the Lord. However they were probably shocked when a total stranger told them that their son would rise and fall for Israel. God had revealed to Simeon that he was in the presence of the Lord. Joseph and Mary were able to see Christ through Simeon.

When we let Christ shone through us others are going to notice. People who do not know Christ can see Christ in many ways. One of these ways is through the way you act. If you live a life that is Christ-like people are going to take notice.

What we can learn from Simeon and apply to our lives is that we need to seek the presence of the Lord. Just eight days after the birth of Jesus, Simeon came into the presence of the Lord. He was overcome with joy and excitement. This is how we should be. When we come into the presence of the Lord it will change our lives and we will no longer be the same.

Take away:

  1. We need to stay in the presence of the Lord.
  2. Being in the presence of the Lord will change your life.
  3. Being in the presence of the Lord brings emotions such as joy, peace, and excitement.
