Mark Richt and leadership lessons

I think there are many lessons on leadership that can be learned from this entire situation. You have to take a look at his career at UGA to get a better overview of the situation. 15 Years, 145-51, 14 bowl games, and 2 SEC championships. I would say that was impressive.
1. Sometimes leadership change is needed to go farther.

There comes a time when a leader must change in order for the organization to advance. This is true in college football as well as a major corporation. If a leader has done all he can do then it is only fitting to have a new person leading. This benefits the company since they will get someone with new ideas and more energy. They also have something to prove. This change could also help the old leader. The old leader takes on a new role they are likely to have a renewed energy that will help them succeed in the new environment.

2. Money talks.

Just like any business money speaks volumes. I have heard rumors that donors were holding money back until Mark Richt was fired. I hope that’s not the case but I believe it could be true. If it is wealthy individuals get to call the shots. It is a shame that college is more about football and money than education. In an organization that is dominated by money decisions are going to be made that are not popular.

3. When you are in the hot seat do not make crazy decisions.

I am not a coach so I might be off a little bit why would you put in someone besides your first string quarterback in a big rival game? I personally do not think it was a wise decision. I have heard the Florida game might have sealed Richt’s fate. When you are in the hot seat do not take unnecessary risks. Make everything you do count. Make sure you are making the best decisions possible. Weigh all of your options and count the cost.

4. People get hurt during leadership changes.

It is no secret that many people are hurting by this decision. Coach Richt was a role model to many people, unfortunately they are not going to have him around anymore . It is a sad reality that people will get hurt.

5. Other changes might come.

When decisions like this are made other changes are bound to happen. When you make these types of high profile decisions you have to be prepared for a firestorm. You need to have a public relations campaign in place. When your decision is not popular and you cannot defend it you might find yourself in the hot seat.

#Thanksgivingday 26

The ability to run.

This morning I am running a 5k to assist a wonderful local charity. This charity is MUST Ministries. This is from their website:

Serving our neighbors in need… transforming lives and communities in response to Christ’s call. Vision to become Georgia’s most respected Servant Leader – Restoring lives one person and one community at a time.

I don’t think there is a better mission than to serve those in need in response to God’s call. I enjoy running but knowing I am helping a great missions organization is even better.

See you at the finish line.

#Leadership Involves Seeking Feedback

As a leader it is important to constantly improve your skills. One way to do this is to practice them over and over. Repetition helps you improve but what if you are doing the same thing. If you practice the same actions you will never improve.

One way to improve your actions is to seek feedback. You need to seek feedback from someone who knows what they are talking about. You need someone who has been where you are. This person needs to be a person that you can trust and will give honest feedback. If the feedback is not accurate you will never improve.

You also should get feedback from other people. I seek feedback when I teach a class or I preach. I want to make sure that I am doing the best I can. I have come a long ways because of the information I have received.

When you get feedback whether it is positive or negative you have to analyze it and learn from it. Negative feedback from one person might mean that they just do not like you. Negative feedback from several people might mean there is a problem. Take everything that is said and make improvements.

Georgia Guidestones

This is not my normal type of blog. It is one about something that I saw and I am curious about because there are very few answers. These are just some thoughts I had while visiting this monument.

Have you ever heard of a man named R. C. Christian? I have never heard of him until today. This is the man that was the one that commissioned the Georgia Guidestones. This man is a mystery. He has asked to remain anonymous. Some people think it is Ted Turner. I have heard at one time he had ties to land not far from there. This was through one of his many companies. I also read that Mr. Christian was a WW II vet. I have also heard that he was associated with the KKK. There are only three people that no for sure of the true identity God, “Christian”, and Wyatt Martin.

The monument was erected because concerned American citizens wanted to promote conservation. I had heard a lot about this monument but wanted to see for myself. There is a lot of mystery surrounding the monument starting with the person who commissioned it. There is also mystery about why. Some people say it is instructions after the apocalypse. Some say it is part of a New World Order.

What really gets me is that it was built in a remote location. It is something that is not well known in Georgia. I have family in the area and did not know about it until about two years ago. I have driven by the road it’s on many times in my life. Why was it put in such a remote location? Why was it put on the highest point in this small town? To me it appears that this was done by a secret society. I really want to know the intentions of the ten ruled listed.

1. Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.

2. Guide reproduction wisely – improving fitness and diversity.

3. Unite humanity with a living new language.

4. Rule passion – faith – tradition – and all things with tempered reason.

5. Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts.

6. Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court.

7. Avoid petty laws and useless officials.

8. Balance personal rights with social duties.

9. Prize truth – beauty – love – seeking harmony with the infinite.

10.Be not a cancer on the earth – Leave room for nature – Leave room for nature.

On the surface it appears it might be ok, but really look at it. How do you maintain a population under 500 million if the population is over 7 billion? Guide reproduction? At what point did we decide that it was ok to play God. The person who created this was allegedly a Christian, so he should know that this is not God’s plan for man.

A new living language to unite all humans. Again this is not necessarily God’s plan either. In Genesis we see people migrating to Shinar. They spoke the same language but that changed after God dispersed the inhabitants all over the world. Languages were changed. We no longer have one language.

As I have read about the guidestones I have found a lot of stuff that contradicts other accounts. There is much mystery surrounding it. I have seen so much stating the founder was a Christian. I have seen nothing about this that corresponds with the bible.

I would love to know the true identity of those involved. I would also love to know the intentions of the monument and not just speculation.

#SyrianRefugees

“The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’”

Matthew 25:40 NASB

I have been reading tweets this afternoon about the refugees. I have been looking at pictures on Instagram. There is one that really got to me. It was a young boy approximately 8 years old. The boy was in bad shape. He has a bandage around his arm and chest. He has wounds on his face. He was obviously crying. He was allegedly from Northern Syria.

I see a lot of people on social media who do not want the refugees. Many governors do not want them in their states. Many countries do not want them. I thought about it and I was in agreement at first. Then I thought about it and this is not the way Jesus would react.

They are all children of God. They all deserve safety from terrorism. They deserve to be in an area where they can provide for their family. We as Americans love our safety.

Our country is built on the fact that we care about humanity. Our country was built on human rights. Why would we deny basic human rights of someone because of their nationality or religion? Wasn’t it Jesus that went up to the Samaritan woman? This was a big culture sin. Jesus did not care.

I know that people will say these people might be terrorist. They might be, but I doubt it. If Christians have this mindset how do we evangelize. We can never reach someone with the gospel if we are afraid of them.

Thanksgiving #15

Today I am thankful for my wife. Today my wife turns 37. I first want to wish her a happy birthday.

She is such an amazing woman. She has a wonderful heart. She cares deeply about her family and will do anything for us. She has made sacrifices just to make sure we are happy.

She is a wonderful friend. We have been best friends for a long time. She is there for me when I need to vent. She comforts me after a long day.

I am so thankful for my wife. Happy birthday Brandy. I love you.
